Q.Can you plate cast iron?
A. We can plate many materials, cast iron included. By plating cast iron the cylinder will have all the benefits of NSC except the heat transfer. These benefits include 10 times better wear resistance, more horsepower, and better ring seal.
Thanks E.Marquez, Great info there. Not a lot info about that online.
I was informed that chrome is an option to, but not practical due to price, finding somewhere that does it well, and proper rings etc.. apparently chrome bore was common back in the 70s/80s
Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
In case of chrome cylinders, will you have suitable rings too? Before you mentioned sp rings designed for nikasil, i believe these can be used in cast iron sleeves.
Another point is for different pin diameter on other pistons. If diameter is smaller than on vtr rods, you can make new bushings. Pricey, but not so wild idea in your situation.
If you are considering new pistons, custom made from cp pistons is an option, rings included. I did it this way.

Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
I am for sure going to get custom pistons, still waiting to hear back from JE..Stephan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 8:50 pm In case of chrome cylinders, will you have suitable rings too? Before you mentioned sp rings designed for nikasil, i believe these can be used in cast iron sleeves.

Its just interesting hearing others opinions on possible solutions. I belive with chrome bore, you would use cast iron rings..
Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
Ok, but not sure if you can buy the set. It is hard to find some reliable info, so just for curiosity, question 12

Good info there, looks like the same rings for a cast bore are also used with nikasil from what they said.Stephan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 10:55 pm Ok, but not sure if you can buy the set. It is hard to find some reliable info, so just for curiosity, question 12

There are companies that make custom cast iron rings in the case of a chrome bore, its hard to find info about why only cast iron rings are used with chrome..

Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
Got a response from JE. They have no problem with supplying 99mm pistons with, rings, pins, and clips.
There was no minimum order on those either, I just emailed saying I want part#149139(vtr1000f 11.5:1) but in OS to 99mm..
They said no problem.

Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
Great news, hope you will go straight after that.
Re: Engine rebuild - cylinder re-sleeve
Received JE custom 99mm 11.5:1 pistons today, getting block bored next week.
I dealt with a guy named Bryant.. I would highly recommend dealing with him.
Heres a few pictures with a bit of useful info. Notice on the spec sheet it has a job # for reordering...
