Ive a teal storm, Is Whitby just above Wellington, NZ, if not then it wasnt me, sorry     Actually I havent been there for 10 yrs or so. James Cook born there i believe ( your Whitby not ours) somewhat of a NAME here, what with discovering the place and all, ( history lesson, Maori actually discovered NZ, when Cook found it, it wasnt lost)

That's right (about the James Cook thing - though he set sail from Whitby on the Endeavor and was actually from Marton which is near Middlesbrough where I used to live.)

Theres lots of James Cook related stuff (hospitals, shopping centres etc) up that way, as I imagine there is round the Cook Straight and stuff.

Apart from English influences on towns and city names and some land marks
its mostly maori influenced. In the south names were scotish and european with a mix of maori as well, ie Dunedin, Invercargill, Cromwell etc
The part of Invercargill I live in is Otatara and no, I dont know wot it means.
