VTR track bike conversion
Hi all,
I used to own a few VTRs and enjoyed riding my track bike. I recently shared my friend's SV650 track bike and it was so much fun I'm hooked again.
I purchased Le Kermit's bike and am now converting it into a dedicated track bike. It's a perfect bike as it has all the best mods already and it has been well looked after.
I rode it once on the road and it felt like a boat in comparison to the SV (which is a cracker of a track day bike), so I have a few ideas that I'd like your collective opinion or advice.
I know there are a few track VTRs on here already.
My aim is to shed bike weight, (I'm 92kg and am try to shed weight there too)...
The bike already has the following upgrades:
Rodger'd forks, Nitron shock, F4i calipers and MC, braided hoses plus short levers too.
The engine is completely standard, which is again perfect.
These are my current plans:
Remove fairings, lights and undertray and replace with track fairings and seat unit. Tank will remain as is and the fairings are white and unpainted. I might add some stickers;) I haven't yet thought about a track fairing screen, any advice on which one will work?
As of January No Limits insist on a brake protector. They recommend a GB Race product version which is over 50GBP. It's top quality but does anyone have any other recommendations?
I have some second hand Remus cans and link pipes from the 50th anniversary model. Need to get some straps and springs though. They should be lighter and meet the sound limits without needing any carb changes.
I really liked the gear indicator on my previous bike and will probably add the same again. I also have a lap timer, which I know are prohibited but they look well cool! I'll dig it out.
I'm considering a lithium battery to save a few kgs and a lightened flywheel from Fabio.
I used to have some Harris paddock stands, including the under yoke front. They are top quality and based in Hertford, which is nearby. They are expensive but cheap stands are very worrying to use. Any other recommendations would be appreciated.
I also had to add a cbr fuel pump to my previous bike after a spectacular slide (said the marshal whilst picking up my bike) chasing an R6 coming out of Clearways. All the fuel was used up in the float bowls and wouldn't replenish. I gave it more and more throttle until I stood back up and whack - wheel spin, smoke, big slide off. Fuel pump added.
That bike was lightly tuned, although I'm unlikely to be riding like that anymore. Does anyone have the fuel pump modification? I can't remember what pump it was. I'll do a search as I'm sure it's on here somewhere.
I'll have to start collecting foot pegs, brake levers, clip ons and perhaps add some crash bungs too.
It sounds like great fun but I've just realised that lot is going to cost me a few quid! The best bit is that I don't really have to do anything at all to the bike as it's more than capable as it is.
Brands Indy 15th April and Bedford autdrome on 17th April. Need to pull my finger out.

I've got a few sets of std bars, some std leavers & even a set of well used (re scruffy) front hangers...

If you get Carbonadi covers he will cut the the timing mark holes in them if you ask him.

So I pulled me finger out & 5 Storms & got to the spares cache...
Dug these out...
L/H front hanger compleat.
R/H front hanger no brake pedal.
1 pair of std clipon's.
1 single right hand clipon.
3x std foot pegs & an odd after market one.
I think the foot pegs are all r/h one's I dont think they can be swapped over .
Incoming PM...

A trackday requirement now, although not sure I've ever heard of someone actually coming off due to brake lever contact! But, I'm sure it happens.
I've just fitted an "RRC" brake lever guard, purchased via eBay. I think he's a Brit, just making a few bits on a small scale.
It's much cheaper than Rizoma, gilles, R&G etc, but imo just as good quality.
I went for the CNC with the solid tip, bolts straight into my KTM clipon with an expanding wedge type fitting.
