Creepy clutch
Creepy clutch
Hello all,
I've got a problem with my VTR1000 where the clutch drags even with the clutch lever pulled in.
Its impossible to get into neutral without turning the bike off standing still, but you can sometimes moving.
What I've done;
Change oil for 10w-40 motorcycle oil (shell advance if you're interested)
Removing the slave cylinder showed a lot of gunk, so I rebuilt both slave and master with parts from Wemoto
Remove the clutch plates and clean and check
Replaced the hydraulic hose from master to slave, the one on there was this cheapo red thing which was too long
After I did each of the above, I've bled the system to the point of being confident there was no air
Its still really no better and I'm at a loss what could be wrong?
After replacing the cheapo hose I've started looking at these aluminium levers, they look nice.. But at the minimum lever height you couldn't even disengage the clutch

Re: Creepy clutch
Could it be the clutch pushrod is bent so is hanging up in the operation of the clutch
They are a pig to bleed, so if it's not that there could still be air in the system.
If you've not already tried it, back bleeding at the slave cylinder bleed nipple with a length of hose and a good sized syringe is worth trying,
Chris.

Re: Creepy clutch
As in the long rod that goes through from the slave cylinder to the clutch basket?
Re: Creepy clutch
Yes as those can get bent if not assembled properly.
If it is straight then keep bleeding as Chris said they can be a pain to get all the air out

Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.
Re: Creepy clutch
I have a similar dragging problem with my FJ1200.
The OC recommendation was to use mineral oil and not fully synthetic so I’m going to give that a try.

Re: Creepy clutch
Yep, I found that I had to bleed it until I was sure it has no air in, then carry in for another 20 minutes.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Creepy clutch
Try back bleeding and tie the clutch lever back and leave overnight.
Re: Creepy clutch
Hello again,
What I’ve done,
Back bled
Taped the clutch lever back
Dismantled and polished the slave cylinder
Checked the push rod is straight
Bled with the bike leant at extreme angles either way
And after all that it’s still no better!
Which is why I don’t know if it can be a bleeding issue if it never gets any better?
Any other ideas? Is there any way of testing the pressure, how far the slave moves?

Re: Creepy clutch
Are you using mineral oil or fully synthetic as fully synthetic can cause issues

Re: Creepy clutch
I’m using this oil, it’s semi synthetic. I had all the plates out and gave them a clean aswell.
I did this because when I first got the bike and tried rebleeding etc I thought maybe the plates could of been contaminated.

Re: Creepy clutch
Could be the issue. I have a fj1200 with the same symptoms and have done the same as you cleaning slave cylinder and re bleeding The FJ forum recommended mineral oil as synthetic oils have caused some bikes issues. I’m going to change mine at some point as I’ve tried everything else.

Re: Creepy clutch
Yes they don’t seem to all move at the same time or distance. Most recommended encore clutch plates and springs.

Re: Creepy clutch
It appears you don't have the tab's on the final clutch plate in the shallow slots on the clutch housing

It looks like all the clutch plate tab's are in the same long slots in your video,
Chris.
