Starter relay "clicking"

Post by Maya58 »

Hi Everyone,
Firstly thank you to everyone on here,as i have with alot of research completely gone from one end of my 1997 vtr to the other, and have replaced and serviced absolutely everything that could be done.
I had the bike running perfect etc, and then stupidly as i was setting up my rear brake foot rest for my long legs, noticed the plastic nut on the rear brake light foot switch had broken, I then took apart the switch leaving the two wires exposed from inside it.
As i then decided to quickly run my bike and put it in my workshop to replace the whole switch, somehow managed to tap the wires with my leg and instantly blew a 10amp fuse in the box next to the battery.
After replacing the fuse, turned on the ignition and now i have no life anywhere apart from a click coming from the starter relay, I have ordered a new one, fitted it today and still only have clicking from the new relay, nothing else.
I have also bridged the positive and negative on the starter relay and had no spark or any sign of the starter motor turning over.
So the battery is totally brand new, starter relay is brand new, all the fuses are ok, when the ignition is switched on I have all the lights working OK,,
Am I right in thinking I could have blown the rectifier and that needs replacing??
Any words of wisdom would mean everything to me as I driving me mad..
Thanks so much Maya

There is a 30amp main fuse in the starter relay, check that, there should be a spare under the relay.

Clicking relay could be the reg/rec has failed...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

It's possible that you simply have a flat battery.
A short will drain the battery pretty quickly.

Put it on charge for an hour and try again.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Hi guys,, I have checked the 30amp fuse and to make sure it was replaced with a new one,
And i have had the battery on charge with a bike charger, it has a full charge.
So is it likely to be the rectifier??
Is there any way I can check it without the engine running by using a multimeter.
Again thank you for your help

Silly question,
from you first post. Does the relay chatter as soon as you turn the ignition on?
If not, I would use the multimeter and check all the 12v supplies. Do you have lights? I wouldn't be changing the rectifier just yet. You should be able to unplug it and everything will still function as normal on the bike until the battery runs low.
If the relay chattering is only happening when you press the starter button it will be one of two things. 1) too much load on the battery, ie starter motor seized or power cable deteriorated and leaking to earth. Or 2) something dragging down the electrics like a faulty component or bad earth.
make sure all the terminals from the battery through to the starter motor are clean and tight.

Thx pete,, Appreciate the response , it only clicks when I press the starter button, I have all lights working OK,
I will check over the starter motor, and all the wires with it,
And will also check the earth,
Once i have figured it out I will post an update.
Thank again
