Front wheel removal.

This should be an easy one for the experienced :wink:

What is the easiest way to remove the front wheel?

I have an abba paddock stand and possible hoisting means by the way of the garage rafters :roll:

I have the Honda cd manual and have read their method but was wondering if there was a better way, it the hoisting bit im apprehensive about :roll:

Have used a similar method on a smaller bike, but instad of using the hoist from the rafters of a garage, i used a brick, well couple of and a tie from the pilion grip don't know if you could use something similar.

That's working on the lodgic that the abba stand lifts enough to pivot the front wheel off the ground.

Other wise you could always place a block of wood/couple of bricks under the abba stand so that you have enough pivot room.

I have a cheap trolley jack which, with a little piece of chipboard on it so as not to damage the sump, goes underneath a treat. When the bellypan is on I use the exposed exhaust pipe at the offside and put blocks of wood under the sidestand aand that works well too. I think the jack was less than £10 if I remember right.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

First question:
Do you mean an abba stand (locks into swignarm pivot) or a paddock stand (lifts under rear swingarm)?

I've got a similar stand to the abba one & its the same method as Stratman for me, block of wood and a jack under the sump (the further forward the better)
However, I'd recommend taking the trouble to undo 2 bolts and remove the belly pan coz jacking up on an exhaust pipe is not to be recommended

Also, hoisting from the rafters is not a problem either

BE AWARE
1) If you have a rear paddock stand the weight of the rear wheel in helps to balance the bike (found out through experience!! :? )

2) With either method make sure you undo all the necesary bolts while the bike is firmly on the floor. Exerting a lot of force when the front wheel is up in the air is asking for trouble

Removal
Loosen (but dont remove yet) the fork pinch bolts, the wheel spindle and the brake calipers
Lift front end
Remove brake calipers and support them (bungee cord or string from the handlebars works fine, just dont let them dangle on the hoses)
Stick foot under wheel and support it to take the weight off the spindle
Remove spindle
Drop wheel to the ground

Before refitting, take a bit of wood and carefully prise the brake pads apart a bit so they fit over the disks easily
Then its exactly the reverse of the above removal procedure

So you don't use a paddock stand just jack it up off the sidestand :?

its ok strat i would prob do that too :D .... as long as the wheel is up and its supported evenly and sensibly using a jack, blocks of wood and or G/f's head and it passes a quick shake test and doesnt fall over its all good. ....

it is a good idea to back off the axle/pinch nuts and caliper bolts before yoiu get the wheel up tho...VeetyR ( john'o )

Storming Ben,

The Abba stand i have is the one that fits onto the swinging arm pivot.

With this sort of stand if i remove the bellypan and put a jack under the front of the engine it will lift enough before the back wheel touches down to be able to remove the front wheel?

ratchet straps-----rafters------handlebars------- simples, totally agree with do all the loosening on the floor :thumbup:

well go and get one they are not expensive and you will more than likely need it again
