I have taken the forks of of the bike
When I lay the fork legs side by side on the bench, one is longer
One slider sticks out further than the other
Compressed them both and they still end up at different lengths
Do they need an overhaul or what?

Yes.
Strip and make sure that the stanchions are the same length.
You might as well renew seals, slider bearings (2 each leg) and oil while your'e there.
If you haven't uprated the springs yet, now's your chance, and check the head bearings as well while the legs are out, because if they need replacing you're most of the way there with the wheel and legs out.
There; that should get you out of the shopping on Saturday.

Check the little springs on the dampers.Has it got a replacement stanchion on one side?Bottom bolt come loose?hope not.
