Chain Splitter/Riveter

Most likely been asked a stack of times before. But does anyone have any recommendations as I have to renew the Chain and Sprockets on my Storm and 750SS, so it makes sense to buy my own tool.....

I have never had good experiences with the cheaper tools, £30=£40 jobbies, and seem to always bend the pins when riveting. The last time I done a chain I took the bike to a local Motorcycle garage where he riveted it for me. I was mighty impressed with the tool he used which was a whale. One day I will splash the cash and invest in one as it will last a lifetime.

As for getting the old chain off I use an angle grinder.

I just got one from cycle gear for $33 US dollars.

Carl, you use the grinder to grind off 2 rivet ends then pop the plate off right? Not cut all the way through the chain?

For the storm just take the left footpeg hanger off and the chain will come out as there's no frame blocking the way. Rivet the chain off the bike ( I use a pin hammer and a vice) and slip it on.

Though for the duke then you'll need chain splitter/riveter. Like Carl suggests use a angle grinder to to take the rivet heads off and remove a link to take apart the the chain. M&P have the chain splitter/riveter.

Last time I done a chain, which was on my Fazer, I just chopped through the whole thing. It's quicker than faffing around trying to find the link. Just got to be careful not to catch anything else. Usually the wheel is off and out the way anyway and then I cut through the chain that is sagging down on the ground. 30 sec job and then pull it all out.

Standard arm on mine, changed the chain on my old CBR a while back, just never got round to buying a tool. Loathe paying someone to do something I can do myself. Thanks chaps!

Personally I use a RK chain tool but I do tend to install more chains than most people.

Also when removing a chain, if it is worn out or not going to be used again I just use a set of bolt cutters and as you guys would say...Bob's your uncle your done......

Oh yeah, and use the old chain and a zip tie to pull the new chain into place. (where applicable)

Yep, Africa Twin is going Saturday..... Part exing it with a fella. His bike and £200 for mine. Getting a CB1300 ......Again !!!

I was, but basically I'm getting a mint red and white 2003 CB1300, 11000 miles, akro can, fsh, for the equivalent of £2200. Couldn't refuse, and tbh, I need more power than the Africa was dishing out.
