Never really noticed anything distinctive. Changing oil can sometimes help smooth things out.

A quick search shows this > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=123 & http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=717 but little else from over a decade.

You must be still running in

my bike has 13k on the clock, full service history, I just put new very expensive oil and filter in, and still have a clunk. its not massive, but not as silent as all of the other gears for instance. I have seen this question asked a few times and the normal answer is, yes.

Try riding the bike differently!! Ie short shift into second, give the throttle a blip. The Honda cbf600 clonks if you rag it in first.

2nd gear is always going to be a bit tricky for the box as it has to get past neutral. Try to be a little smoother with the gear changes helps. You could also move 1 spline to the right on the selector shaft which gives it a shorter shift and adjust the gear lever to suit. But yes they all clunk a bit so perfectly normal.

The crush drive rubbers and gear linkages play a big part in the smoothness of gear changes

+ 1 that's what I would suggest, changing into 2nd gear as soon as possible without revving the bike any more than what is needed.

Adjust the chain properly, then bleed the clutch for at least half an hour until all the bubbles are out.
If all else fails try fitting a shorted gear lever.

If that doesn't work, split the cases and replace the selector forks, and file undercuts on the engagement dogs.

Good enough for the drag strip, that lot....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Short shift and make sure chain is adjusted properly.

I know when I need to adjust the chain by the clunk into second gear.

Adjust and alls well again!!!!!
