crash bang wallop............

Post by VeetyR »

As the title suggests, my storm decided last week that it wanted to get aquainted with a nissan micra. lol

Jokes aside, the silly lady involved pulled a U-turn from a parking space directly infront of me. With no time to do anything except hit brakes and horn at same time i ploughed into her door having scrubbed most of my 30+MPH off.....hit her at approx 5MPH or less, bounced off her car and landed on my feet( wasnt hurt other than a few pulled muscles etc ).

To look at u wouldnt think the bike was damaged too badly, apon closer inspection tho there are a few things that need putting right.

Catalogued visual damage on bike(done by myself) : -

- Damage/scuffing to fairing which is also pushed closer to the frame on right hand side(bent mounting bracketry?).
- Scuffing to headlight unit .
- Screen split.
- Wing mirror mount bent and casing scuffed.
- Handle bar end weight scuffed.
- Right indicator lense cracked and working intermittently.
- Right hand engine casing scuffed.
- Right hand rearset has fracture in corner of ally by the footpeg.
- Exhaust pipe mounting tab snapped.
- Steering off centre and doesnt feel quite right.
- there are 2 small dinks in the tank.

My bike was f*ckin mint before this and to look at it the scuffs and scratches are minor.

That didnt stop the repair garage finding other stuff like a dink in the wheel, b**gered exhaust assembly amongst others.

The estimate on a bike that doesnt even look crashed???

£3687.60.......thats parts and £300 labour.

the wheel? over £400
The tank? over £200
Decals from honda? £179(tank)...£129(seat unit)
exhaust ass? ...£458
cant be as*ed to list the rest but u get the picture.

.....for what was a minor thing it sure has turned out an expensive excursion for her insurance company, Rider Support Services are on the case. They are brilliant, i gave them the details of accident, they advised that because of how it happened it is almost certainly 100% in my favour, they arranged for my bike to be picked up and taken for a 2nd estimate and in the meantime have arranged for a new bike for me to ride around on.( all claimable on the 3rd parties insurance ). now they have everything i just sit back let them do the running around while i wait for a cheque.

The bike i have got?......a spanking new Bandit 650 '07reg with 750miles on the clock, indefinately until the claim is sorted.

do miss my storm tho and hope to get it back from the ins co after they write it off which is almost certainly going to happen. :(

anyway, i will keep yall updated as this progresses......

ride safe peeps. VeetyR(john'o)

What a pain in the Ar$e!
Glad you're ok VeetyR hope it all gets sorted smoothly.
Have the garage take real good look at those forks. They might have just been knocked off centere in the triple clamp but they could have just as easily bent even at that speed.

the cost of replacement parts if FKIN ridiculous...how much for a pair of tank decals...how the hell do they get away with it...thank god for Ebay.. i got my totaled storm back on the road for about £600.parts from friends and ebay..
so much for the much vaunted angle of cheap and economical transport.. I get about the same MPG from my landrover as the bike. and parts for the landy are cheap as..... compared to a big bike.. no wonder bike theft is on the up, the thieving scrotes make a fortune from broken machines sold on as spares...anyhoo glad your'e ok m8y.if you can live with a few scratches on the storm. you'll spend less...good luck

Dont I know it - my car is more economical than the bike (well it is a diesel) but I still love the bike and would take it over the car any day :)

Sorry too hear about your bad experience John'o :!: But glad you're not too bad :!:
It is as others have already said, a right rip-off, the cost of new parts :!:

I think manufactures (for cars as well) are having to cut the profit margin down so much for new vehicles, that they are relying on big profits from new spares. Obviously not a lot of good for joe public if he should have a minor spill. It's about time something was done about it :!: :!: :!:

Sorry to hear that.
Glad you're OK though.
Well, when mine got written off froma 25mph drop the thing that I thought was the most expensive of the rip offs for parts was the std (poxy) 'bellypan' or oil filter cover more like. I got one second hand off of EvilBay for a fiver a few weeks before (to get it sprayed the fairing colour), but they said they had to fit a new one for the insurance purposes etc.

One hundred and seventeen pounds and fifty pence + VAT!!!!!
This is the worst................. unless you of course know differently.

Ok...update!!

Since i left this post a number of things have happened and not happened.

Firstly, the a*swipe who swiped me off my bike has still not filled out there claim forms and submitted the accident report to her insurance company.

The engineer has been and inspected my bike but nothing can go forward now until she pulls her finger out so that they can establish liability. So basically i am playing the waiting game and all the while this is going on hire charges for the vehicle i was given are still rising by £59 per day!!!!!! plus storage charges for my vehicle too.

I have expressed my concerns about this because i dont wanna get lumped with the charges, especially as it could take upto 6mnths(worsed case scenario) for them to sort it out.

6mnths hire charges at £59 per day = £10,620+!!!!! that could by nearly 3 bandits lol.

I have been assured by my solicitors and the hire co that as long as i havent lied on my claim form i wont be charged for hire, still doesnt stop me worrying tho, especially as the 3rd party doesnt seem to be playing ball.

As for the hire bike itself....well.......what can i say...crashed it.....yet another pr*ck did a U-turn right infront of me......I must step in here and say....i am not a crasher/nutter or whatever....to have 2 bike accidents in a mnth is just plain ol' bad luck for me......anyway claim number 2 is underway....this time however he admitted liability and i had a witness too....so, no excess for me to pay and hire co gave me another bike......

This time it was a yammy Fazer 600.....what a lovely engine, didnt like the bike too much tho the front end felt really vague in the bends..so they changed it for me for a nice sparkly new SV650....now this bike is nothing short of fantastic. Only fault i can see is a slightly undersprung front end but it aint no worse than my storm was. And i am happy with it.....infact i would probably buy one it is that good.

So , to wrap it up and in order to keep my sanity with all these bl**dy things happening...I am looking positively in respect that i have now ridden and experienced more bikes in the last 6mnths than i have in the last 6 years hahaha.

Verdicts : -

My old superfour ... Fantastic crackin lil 400 i just shouldnt have sold.

My firestorm.....well need i say more. i just want it back.

Mates CBR900 ... nice but too much...and the missus didnt like the perch.

Mates Honda 750 Shadow....lovely cruiser if u like that sorta thing, engine
pulls from nothing in top and no vibes at all. handaling? pah wot handling.

Mates 05 CBR600 RR .... Stupid crazy fast as u like nutterdom.

07 bandit650s....nice road bike but felt like it was made of tin foil and sprung on slinkys.

06 yammy fazer....again, crakin engine but front end just didnt feel connected to the road.

and finaly 07 SV650...bl**dy love it....vtwin shunt in a 250 size package...great fun but pillion comfort is well undesirable...I would buy one defo!!

So as you can see....there is something positive to look at that has come out of all this......perhaps i should crash more often hahaha.

Again, Ride safe yall and i will keep updating this post as stuff happens.

Update again..........

Ok all will be glad to know that further to my last post i have not crashed the SV650 yet lol.....it did however blow over in the wind the other day, meaning i now have to replace an indicator and a bar end weight...its only £50 tho so i aint grumblin too much.

As for the progress of my claim....The 3rd parties insurance engineer has submitted his report with the figures for my bike...they are as follows :-

- Pre accident damage value £2250
- Salvage Value £150

The bike has been given Cat-c as well so i can put it back on the road.

Basically all this means i can buy my bike back from the ins co for the princely sum of £150 and should get a chq relatively soon for £2100

The bike is being returned to me next week(YEAH!!) Which means i can start to source some parts for it...I am also gonna use the time its off road to have the forks out and get em rogered(why not eh?)

Anyway i will be putting a post in the for sale/wanted section for various lil bits n bobs....so if u got anything knocking about please check the post and if its something i need i am sure we can come to some arrangement.

As ever i will keep u updated as to the progress of the claim.....

Ride safe . And if you dont.....Rider support rocks :) VeetyR

sorry to hear about your crash, at least you weren't badly hurt :D

Sorry to hear about your accident,,,but hey - look at bright side! Bikes repairable, bones heal worse than bikes. Most important - you are OK. As for damage - with playing tight git, fleabay and some patience you will replace stock rearsets with nice Harris thingies, tank if it is just bumped can be repaired with can of compressed gas for PC cleaning and good heater etc. etc. I am going through it now with my Storm and believe me - crashing it yourself on empty road is much worse...no cheque :(
